Merry christmas

Merry Christmas.

I am attaching an electronic copy of the card we sent out this year. I hope you like it. It is an annual project I really enjoy doing.

When I was in high school and college, one of my dreams was to be a greeting card artist. I studied both graphic design and illustration & I really loved illustration classes. I loved all my art classes really…. well, except maybe oil painting & clay sculpture (which I ended up dropping).

During my years of study, I learned that landing a job as a graphic designer offered more security than getting work as an illustrator, as Illustrators were typically hired on a contract/freelance basis. Also, to consider pursuing the most well known card company, Hallmark, I did not want to move out to Kansas City, hundreds of miles away from close friends & extended family (…and the ocean). So, every year I simply work up a Christmas card to share.

Thankfully my creative skills & interests have broadened quite a bit over decades & I don’t feel the strong pull to focus on card design exclusively like I once did.

It’s fun to look back on some of my first Christmas cards right out of college… all illustrated by-hand. I would like to incorporate more by-hand as my starting-point on future designs, rather than relying solely on the computer from start to finish. However, this year, again, it is all done with the tools of the iPhone, iPad and apple computer.
